Air Barrier Testing

SBSA performs air barrier testing of commercial and residential buildings to determine the field installed performance of the constructed air barrier systems. Air barrier testing is performed in accordance with ASTM E779 – Standard Test Method for Determining Air Leakage Rate by Fan Pressurization. Diagnostic evaluations are performed during the air barrier test in accordance with ASTM E1186 – Standard Practices for Air Leakage Site Detection in Building Envelopes and Air Barrier Systems, which allows identification of locations where excessive air infiltration or exfiltration is occurring.

Results of the testing and diagnostic evaluations allow for the determination of necessary remedial actions to be performed in order for proper construction of the air barrier systems. Identifying and addressing potential excessive air infiltration/exfiltration performance issues, that are a result of barrier system, allows for reduction of potential energy costs associated with the design and construction of the air barrier system.
